Which EVs have heat pumps? The 2026 winter list

A heat pump heats the cabin with 2–4x less energy than old resistive heaters — the single biggest factor in how much range your EV keeps in winter. We verified 36 popular EVs against manufacturer specs and reputable outlets. 29 have it standard, 5 make you pay or pick the right trim, 2 don't offer it at all.

Why it matters

Heating is the hungriest accessory in an EV — at 0°F, a resistive heater can cut range ~40%. A heat pump moves existing heat instead of making it from scratch, clawing back a meaningful share of that loss. It doesn't eliminate winter range loss (cold batteries are still less efficient), but it's the difference between a bad winter and a miserable one. Run your own numbers in our winter range estimator — flip the heat-pump toggle and watch.

Questions, answered

What does a heat pump do in an EV?

It moves heat from outside air (or waste heat from the motor and battery) into the cabin, using 2–4x less electricity than a resistive heater doing the same job.

Can I add a heat pump to an EV that doesn't have one?

No — it's integrated into the thermal system at the factory. If winter range matters to you, buy a car that has one.

Do heat pumps help in extreme cold?

Less so below ~15°F, where most systems fall back to resistive backup heat. They shine in the 15–45°F band where most winter driving happens.
